This is the first post for rooting update for Xiaomi Mi A1 Android Device. Follow the future post in this blog to see the latest update of Mi A1. This is a PC method so follow the video first linked below.

Note

If you are rooting your Mi A1 first time then you need to unlock bootloader of your phone. This step will erase all the data on your phone. Be sure to take proper backup before you go ahead. Also rooting may damage or void your phone warranty. Try with your own risk.

Basic Requirement

This method needs adb and fastboot setup. You can either install minimal adb and fastboot or you can install complete Android Studio. For rooting purpose, minimal adb and fastboot is just enough. Follow this XDA Forum guide to install the minimal adb and fastboot setup.

Steps to Unlock the Bootloader

Following are the steps and list of commands needs to be taken first,
  • Enable OEM unlock and USB debugging:
    • Go toSettings » About phone » and tap “Build number” Seven/Ten times.
  • Go to Settings » Developer options » and look for “Enable OEM unlock” option, tick the checkbox next to it.
  • Also enable the USB debugging checkbox.
  • Now connect your phone to PC and open a command prompt window.
  • To reboot your phone into Bootloader/Fastboot mode with the command below,

  • If it asks for “Allow USB debugging”, accept it by selecting OK/Yes
  • Once you are in bootloader, check the device connection status by using fastboot devices command as below,
  • Now type the OEM unlock command,
  • Then execute the command "fastboot erase userdata"
  • The next command to clear the cache is "fastboot erase cache"
  • The last command will be "fastboot reboot"
Once the device will restart it will simple wipe your complete phone and you have to setup your device again. You need to again enable the developer option now.
