Rumored BlackBerry Phones : BlackBerry Rome and Hamburg leaks were stolen renders
We got to know the BlackBerry Priv first as “Venice.” As word of an follow-on to the company’s first Android device came about, we also heard of “Vienna.” And then we wrote about some renders of supposedly new phones: one with an on-body keyboard and the name “Rome” attached to it; the other an all-touch device called “Hamburg.”
We talked about these renders on our podcast this week as if these were real things from real computers along the information chain. Turns out we fell into the weakest link of that chain with moire, editing and a whole bunch of watermarks — the worst kind of chain.
It turns out that BlackBerry Central’s Dylan Habkirk is the originator of these concepts renders that he said are based on “device plans and/or prototype units that I have seen in person.” Perhaps we could say that these images were leaked by proxy, but even then, there’s that nasty problem of attribution.
Habkirk goes onto reveal more findings from his perusing of device sketches and internal documents. He points out that Hamburg codename has a larger chance of not being real as the Rome one is.
Apparently, the Rome has internal specs that are like that of the Priv or otherwise the same. The screen may feature a dual curved edge as well, which left some questioning how the keyboard will shape.
With “Rome” said to have an 8-megapixel selfie snapper, we’d question how BlackBerry may keep these phones in the mid-range territory, but Habkirk assures us that both phones will be somewhere around $449.
Of course, we’ll be waiting for real devices told of in real press releases, but we’re waiting a while yet.
