Is this the Lumia 550 (picture)? Update – yes, it is

News about the Microsoft’s new generation of low-end handsets have been coming like an avalanche over the last week, and right on cue a new render of the handset appears to have leaked also, via Russian site OneTile.ru.

The handset, which is expected to be released only in early 2016, is said to bear a close resemblance to the Lumia 640, but unusually is said to also feature a front-facing flash or Iris scanner.
A close look at the top of the device pictured does show something unusual in the top right of the fascia, but what exactly this is remains to be seen. If Microsoft is able to standardize on cheap Iris scanners (which in terms of hardware are simply cameras with IR lights) then this would be a rather cool coup for the platform.

The recently leaked specs are said to be:
  • 1.1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 quad-core
  • Removable SD
  • 8 GB internal storage
  • 4.7-inch 720 x 1280 AMOLED display
  • White or Black glossy  polycarbonate
  • LTE
  • Rear camera with flash
  • Metal around the display
  • Front-facing camera with flash or Iris scanner
  • On-screen keys
  • Speaker lower left on the rear
  • Cost – around $120/120 Euro
From the render the device looks pretty inoffensive, and depending on its thickness the handset may form a pretty good foundation for the Windows 10 Mobile range. Of course the image remains unverified, and could as easily be a mock-up or hoax.
